What is random video chat on ThunChat?

It is a face-to-face conversation with a stranger picked by chance. You tap Start, your camera switches on, and a moment later you are looking at someone who tapped Start too, somewhere else in the world. If it works, keep talking. If it doesn’t, tap Next and meet someone else.

Every match is two people. No group room, no audience, no comment stream scrolling past. That sounds like a small detail until you try it: with only one person able to answer you, people actually answer, and the first awkward seconds pass quickly.

Chance is the front door, not the only one. The online list is everyone who is around right now, if you would rather pick than leave it to luck. When you get on with someone, follow them, and later you can send a message or call them on camera from their profile. There is also a feed of short clips to scroll and a Live tab with streams to watch, though you cannot broadcast yourself.

“A random match should take one tap, and leaving it should take one tap. Everything else is optional.”

How ThunChat is set up

How do you start a video chat with a stranger?

Tap Start, let your browser use the camera, and you are matched. There is no form, no username to invent and no profile to finish first. Video is already chosen when the match screen opens, with Audio and Text beside it.

  1. Tap Start

You land on the match screen as a guest. No email, no password, no username to invent.

  2. Allow the camera

Your browser asks once. Video is the mode selected when the screen opens, so you are ready straight away.

  3. Meet the person in front of you

Someone new appears. Smile, say hi, say where you are. That is plenty for an opening.

  4. Stay, follow or tap Next

If the first ten seconds feel flat, tap Next. If it clicks, follow them so you can find each other again.

The longer version, covering free matches, coins, messages and what following someone actually does, is on the page about how ThunChat works.

The format everyone remembers

Looking for Omegle-style video chat?

Then you already know the format. Omegle made random video chat famous: open a page, get a stranger, skip whenever you like. ThunChat works the same way at its core, one tap to a random face and one tap to move on, but it is a separate site with no ties to the old one.

What we kept is the bit people loved, the surprise of not knowing who appears next. What we changed came from the complaints people had about that era. You can follow someone you liked instead of losing them forever when the chat ends. You can pick from an online list on nights you do not want chance to decide. You can switch to voice or text when the camera feels like too much. And it all works in a phone browser, without the extra install most apps ask for.

A few things stay the same on purpose. There is still no gender filter, because random means random. There is still no long sign-up form. And a chat still ends the moment either of you wants it to.

Video first, with voice and text a tap away

All three modes live on the same match screen, along the bottom: Video, Audio, Text. You choose before each match, so you can start on camera, drop to voice for the next one, and come back to video whenever you like.

Video

The main event

Face to face with a stranger, one at a time. This is what most people come for, and it is the mode already selected when the match screen opens. Good light and a quiet corner make a bigger difference than any filter.

Audio

Camera off

Bad hair day, messy room, or you just want to hear someone first. Pick Audio and you get a stranger on the line with no picture at all. Earphones help a lot.

Text

Typing only

For a crowded room, a quiet office, or a moment when talking out loud is not an option. Pick Text and you are paired with someone to type to.

The first ten seconds on camera

Most people decide whether to stay in the first ten seconds of a video match, and most of what decides it has nothing to do with looks. Light, sound and one decent sentence do the work. Here is what helps.

Look at the lens, not the screen

It feels odd for a second, but to the other person it looks like eye contact. Glance back at their face when they talk.

Say three things

Hi, where you are, one easy question. “Hey, I’m in Toronto and it’s snowing again. What’s it like where you are?” That is enough.

Give it ten seconds

Everyone looks a bit stiff when the video first connects. Wait for the second sentence before you decide anything.

Leave kindly

“Nice to meet you, have a good night” takes two seconds before you tap Next.

Flirting on a video chat works the same way: light, specific, and only once the other person is smiling back. Lamp in front of you, not behind. Phone propped up at eye level, not held below your chin. If nothing lands, say goodbye and tap Next; a short first chat is normal. There are more openers, plus ways to leave without being awkward, in the guide on how to talk to strangers online.

When people switch the camera on

Nobody schedules a chat with a stranger. It happens in the gaps of a day, and some moments are simply better on camera than anywhere else. If what you mostly want is to meet women from other countries, the page on girl video chat is written for exactly that.

Sunday evening, nothing on

The week starts tomorrow and you do not feel like another episode. Ten minutes of random video chat with someone in a different time zone is a better way to end the weekend than scrolling.

The view is worth sharing

Snow on the balcony, a storm rolling in, the sea outside a holiday window. Turn the phone round and let a stranger see it with you; it is the easiest opener there is.

Dinner for one, phone propped up

Plate on the table, phone against the salt shaker. Eating while you chat on camera feels a lot less lonely than eating in front of the TV, and food is a topic everyone has an opinion on.

You just got a haircut

Or a new jacket, or finally painted the wall behind you. Strangers give honest first impressions, and they have no reason to be polite about it.

Your pet is being ridiculous

A dog that will not stop sneezing or a cat sitting on the keyboard. Nothing breaks the ice on video faster, and half the people you meet will bring theirs over to the camera.

You want to see who you are talking to

Plenty of people simply prefer a face. A smile, a raised eyebrow and a bit of background say more in five seconds than a page of typing.

Is ThunChat free to use?

It is free to start. New visitors get some free matches, and the Reward Center at the top of the match screen offers more once you have been online for a while, several times a day. When the free matches run out, matching carries on with coins, which you can buy in the app.

So you can try a few matches, see whether the people and the pace suit you, and only then decide whether ThunChat is worth a few coins. There is also an optional VIP membership; its privileges are listed in the app before you pick a plan.

What the other person can see

On video, they see your face, hear your voice and see whatever is behind you. On audio, they get your voice and the noise in your room. In text, only your words. ThunChat does not ask for your real name, email or phone number to start, so the rest is up to what you choose to say.

  • Check the frame before you tap Start. Post on the table, a window with a view of your street, a work badge on the chair. People notice more than you would think.
  • Keep the identifying stuff back. Full name, school, workplace, social handles: a good conversation with someone you met three minutes ago does not need any of them.
  • Money talk is a red flag. Anyone asking for payment, gift cards or a move to another app straight away gets a Next, then a report.

Blocking, reporting and the habits that keep a random chat pleasant are all on the ThunChat safety page.

Questions before your first video chat

Do I need to download an app for random video chat?

No. ThunChat works in the browser on your phone, tablet or computer. If you like having an icon, add it to your home screen and it opens like an app, with nothing to install.

Do I have to sign up?

No. Tap Start and you are matched as a guest, with no email, phone number or real name to give.

Is there a gender filter?

No. There is no gender filter on random video chat or the other modes, so you could meet anyone who is looking at the same moment. If you would rather choose, open the online list and pick someone yourself.

Is every chat one to one?

Each match is one person and you. There are no group rooms and nobody else watching the conversation.

How does the Reward Center work?

The Reward Center sits at the top of the match screen. After you have been online for a while it offers free matches to claim, and it can do that several times a day. New visitors also get some free matches to begin with.

What are coins and VIP for?

Coins keep matching going once your free matches are used up. VIP is an optional membership with its own privileges, listed in the app before you choose a plan. You can try ThunChat without buying either.

Is ThunChat like Omegle?

The idea is similar: one tap pairs you with a random stranger, one to one. ThunChat is its own site and has no connection with Omegle, and it adds an online list, follows, messages and a short video feed.

What happens when I tap Next?

The current chat ends and you are matched with someone new in the same mode. Nobody is told why you moved on.

Can I talk to the same person again later?

Tap follow while you are still talking. Some people you meet become friends you call every week. From their profile you can send a message or call them on camera whenever you both have time.

Can I chat with someone who speaks another language?

Often, yes. Text messages can be translated automatically, so you can keep a conversation going in writing even when your languages do not match.

Can I watch live streams on ThunChat?

The short video feed has a Live tab where you can watch streams that are on now. Users cannot start a stream of their own.

What is the short video feed?

A scrollable feed of short clips from people on ThunChat. It is an easy way to look around before you start a chat, or between chats.

How do I block or report someone?

End the chat with Next first, then open their profile and use block or report. Reports go to the ThunChat team.

Does ThunChat work on a computer?

It runs in current desktop browsers on Windows and Mac, and in mobile browsers on iPhone and Android. Allow the camera and microphone when your browser asks.

Where are the people on ThunChat from?

People from more than 50 countries use it. Roughly one in five users is in the US, so US evenings tend to be busiest. The UK, Germany, Canada and France are among the bigger groups after that.

How do I tell whether a new video chat site is worth trying?

Open it and see how far you get without typing an email. If you can reach a real person in under a minute, leave with one tap and find a report button, it is worth a second look.
