ThunChat About
ThunChat is a small, focused chat site: random matches with one stranger at a time, on camera, by voice or by text. Here is why we built it that way, who it is for and what we deliberately left out.
Free to start · No sign-up · Video, voice or text

Because the old idea of random video chat was good and most versions of it had gone wrong. We wanted the surprise of meeting someone new without long sign-up forms, crowded rooms where nobody hears you, or losing a good person forever the moment the chat ends.
So ThunChat keeps the good part and trims the rest. One tap to a match. One person at a time. One tap to leave. And a follow button for the few people you would like to see again.
Anyone who likes meeting new people in short bursts and would rather do it face to face. That covers a lot of different lives, and most of them are not looking for anything more than a good conversation with someone they would never have met otherwise.
The person who wants a stranger to see the storm outside their window. The one cooking dinner for one with the phone propped against a jar. The football fan who needs someone, anyone, to argue with after a bad result. The one who is simply curious what someone in Ghana or Ukraine is doing on a Tuesday evening.
It is also for people who are not ready for a camera every time. That is why voice and text sit on the same match screen as video, and why you can switch before every match.
All over. ThunChat users connect from over 50 countries. About a fifth of them are in the US; after that, the UK, Germany, Canada and France are some of the larger groups. The rest is a long, mixed list, which is the point: a random match should feel random.
Who is around also depends on the hour you open it. Time zones keep the mix moving. Mornings in Europe overlap with late nights in the Americas, and Asia comes online as the US goes to bed, so the same hour on different days can feel like a different site.
Because so many languages meet here, text messages can be translated automatically. It does not make every conversation easy, but it means a typed chat rarely dies at hello.
Saying no to features is as much a part of ThunChat as the ones we built. Here is what you will not find, and why.
By making the safest choices the easiest ones. You start with no personal details, every match is one to one, leaving takes one tap, and block and report sit on every profile. We cannot control what someone does on their own device, and we say so plainly.
The safety page is the practical version, written for people about to switch their camera on.
Someone in Chicago opens ThunChat after dinner, keeps Video selected and taps Start. The first match is a student in Bogotá who wants to argue about football; they talk for fifteen minutes about last night’s game and follow each other. The second is quiet, so Next. The third is a woman in Manila on her lunch break who laughs at the snow outside his window.
Later he switches to Audio while washing up, and before bed he sends the student a message to ask who won the match. Most evenings look something like that: short chats, a few good ones, and a way to keep those.
It is not a dating site: nobody is matched on looks or interests, and we do not promise dates or meetings. It is not a social network either, with no public feed of your posts, no friend count and no likes to chase. And it is not a stage for users to broadcast from. It is a place to talk to one new person at a time, and we try to keep it exactly that.
If you are new, the how ThunChat works page walks through matching, modes, messages and free matches. The guide on how to talk to strangers has openers that work in every mode, and 1v1 video chat explains why every match is just the two of you.
Questions, problems or something to report? The contact page has the support address and the fixes worth trying first. Otherwise, go and meet someone.
